For the last four years I’ve been taking a series of self portraits around my birthday. It’s a mixture of images of who I am: silly, confident, goofy and just fun. In past years I’ve always used a white background, but this year, marking my 25th birthday I decided to use black. I wanted to focus more on my face and myself as the subject instead of the whole scene. I always have a ton of fun taking these pictures; I started out in photography with self portraiture and still love it.
I take the time every year with these pictures to reflect on how much I’ve changed as a person (both physically and mentally) and how much my life has changed. In one year, I started dating a man that asked me to marry him a few months later; we bought a house and now have three crazy cats. In the last year I also quit my day job and now am a full time wedding photographer. It’s not easy by any means, but I am so much happier.
I’m not sure how long I’ll be doing this project for, but I don’t see myself stopping any time soon.
