Valparaiso, Indiana | November wedding at Aberdeen Manor | Jen + Mitch

valparaiso-indiana-aberdeen-manor-wedding-photographer (174).jpg

I couldn’t have asked for better weather for this November wedding in Valparaiso, Indiana! Jen and Mitch’s wedding at Aberdeen Manor was so beautiful and a ton of fun. I met Jen through another photographer friend who she went to college with (thanks Hannah!!) and I knew just talking with her that their wedding was going to be amazing. I actually met up with both Jen and Mitch for their engagement session about a year before their wedding, so we had an idea of what the weather could be like, but that day it was cold and wet. Not only did it not rain until evening, it was actually pretty warm! It was in the mid 50s with the sun out pretty much all day.

The day started out at Hampton Inn & Suites Valparaiso where both Jen and Mitch got ready separately. Mitch surprised Jen with a wedding gift, the purse she had been eyeing and saying “one day” to. It was such a sweet moment - she didn’t see it coming at all! The ceremony was so beautiful, just seeing Mitch cry as Jen walked down the aisle made me cry! After the ceremony we went outside for family photos, including some BIG groups and then headed out for wedding party photos.

I love bigger wedding parties, they are always so much fun and this group was a hoot! We still had a good amount of time before we had to head to the reception, so we stopped around Valparaiso for some photos of Jen and Mitch alone, and Hannah scoped out a GORGEOUS location right by the venue for some beautiful family photos of Jen, Mitch and Mitch’s son.

The reception started with some pretty epic entrances and the cutting of the giant donut! Mitch actually surprised Jen with their first dance song, which was so cute. Jen’s dance with her dad and Mitch’s dance with his mom were just as beautiful - I’m also just a sucker for parent dances. Remember when I said this wedding party was a hoot? They did not let me down during the reception. They were all on the dance floor just having a blast.

I asked Jen about how her and Mitch met and about their first date, “We met at work! I was an intern at an event company and Mitch worked in logistics. One night we were at a wedding reception waiting for the party to end so we could pick up/teardown our event items. The brides parents paid off the DJ to play for another hour, so we all had to wait outside! We started chatting that night waiting, and then exchanged numbers and that was it!  A few weeks into talking almost daily, Mitch asked me out to dinner after work. We went to Scotty's Brewhouse and had strawberry margaritas and burgers (we didn't drink craft beer back then!). It was a lot of fun, and pretty much after that we were inseparable.“

I of course had to ask Jen about Mitch’s proposal, “Mitch was off work and told me he was driving around scouting new job prospects (we were both looking for a new opportunity with work). I had just gotten off work after doing an interview for a new job that same day. I got back to my apartment and Mitch was there and acting kind of weird, messing with his phone. I went back downstairs to get a bag out of my car, and when I came back up Mitch was grinning at me, and got down on one knee! It was super sweet and just the two of us. I was completely surprised. Turns out, Mitch wasn't scoping new jobs he was getting my ring! Mitch can't keep a secret/surprise to save his life - he said the second he put it in his car and thought about "hiding it" he knew he couldn't wait any longer and proposed that same day!”

Jen and Mitch, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for both being so amazing throughout the whole process and on your wedding day. It was an honor to be your photographer, and I loved being there to witness your commitment to each other and Gavin. I also want to thank you for hanging out in the rain with me for a few minutes for that epic night photo, it’s one of my favorites!! I wish you both the best.

Grand Rapids, Michigan | Magical Backyard Ceremony with Waldron Public House Reception | Mae + Greg

waldron-public-house-grand-rapids-michigan-wedding (9).jpg

Mae and Greg’s October wedding was such a sweet and intimate day. The wedding started at Greg’s parents home in West Olive, Michigan with their backyard ceremony. Greg and his brother built the wooden gateway backdrop for the ceremony and the intimate seating was so perfect. Mae’s principal officiated the wedding and facilitated the nailing of a box in which Mae and Greg wrote each other letters to read on their 15th wedding anniversary.

After the ceremony we headed to The Waldron Public House in Grand Rapids for the reception. I love this venue for smaller intimate weddings, it’s unique and the staff is absolutely amazing. Mae and Greg’s first dance song was called Love is a Bitch by Two Feet which is a beautiful soulful song. Both Mae’s dance with her dad and Greg’s dance with his mom were so sweet, they were full of laughter and so special.

I asked Mae how her and Greg met and about their first date, “We met for a hike at Rosy Mound Natural Area in Grand Haven. It was amazing... it was in March and was snowy, and Greg was prepared for anything- he had hand warmers if I should want or need them, he literally shielded me from the snow. We went out for drinks afterward at Our Bar in Holland and talked/drank/ate for hours! We initially met and started communicating on Eharmony.”

I had to ask Mae about Greg’s proposal, “This is a GREAT one... we took the train out to Glenwood Springs, Colorado from Holland for spring break. Towards the end of the week, we went for a hike to find Hanging Lake (which is a lake that is a mile above the surrounding elevation). I had NO idea he had planned to have my cousin take a picture of us as he proposed there. I was totally surprised! My cousin Emily has assisted both Hill-girl proposals... she is quite special to us! Greg told me he was going back and forth between two rings, but then one of my favorite songs came on and he knew. (John Mayer's Slow Dancing in a Burning Room). He is just the BEST and I am so excited to marry him!”

Mae and Greg, I am so happy that I got to be there to witness the beginning of your next big adventure together. Thank you a million times over for being so incredible; I hope this new adventure together gets better each and every day. Cheers to many more decades of love and happiness!

Petoskey, Michigan | Fall Wedding at Stafford's Bay View Inn | Leeanna + Colin

Leeanna and Colin’s wedding at Stafford’s Bay View Inn in Petoskey, Michigan was such a beautiful and intimate day. We got SO LUCKY that the weather turned out pretty decent for an October wedding; the rain held off for the ceremony but was still a little chilly. You might remember them from their engagement session in the spring, we met up in Charlevoix for a beautiful beach session full of Petoskey stone hunting!

I asked Leeanna about how her and Colin met, “I was supposed to move into his house full of roommates. I didn't end up moving and we just kind of fell into place with each other. I can't remember if we had a true first date but I think we could render Colin's brother's wedding as our first date!”

She then went on and told me about how Colin proposed to her, “We planned a trip with another couple to Traverse City. We were going to go stone hunting but Traverse City really doesn't have a rocky beach. As we were driving by on the way to the hotel, I had said I can tell there aren't any rocks on that beach, I don't want to go. We went to the hotel and everyone convinced me that I really needed to go to the beach and check it out since we were here. Since we had our friends with us, I obliged and we went down to the beach. We were all looking for stones for quite some time because there are no stones on that beach, Colin called me over and said he had found a big one. When I went over there he turned around and was on his knee and proposed. It is so me to have almost ruined his proposal!”

Colin’s brother in law officiated the ceremony, under the arch that Leeanna had been talking to me about for AGES! She wanted a circular arch, and she found such a beautiful one. During their ceremony did a rock ceremony where they placed Petoskey stones in with a succulent. After the ceremony we headed took a big group photo of everyone who attended the wedding and went into bride and groom portraits. Leeanna and Colin always know how to have fun with portraits and just make me laugh, it’s always a blast with them and of course they were happy that the stress of the day was over. After portraits was speeches, dinner and dancing. They danced to a acoustic version of I'm gonna be (500 miles) by Sleeping at Last.

Leeanna and Colin, no one deserves this perfect day more than the two of you. I am so beyond happy that I got to be there to witness the beginning of your next adventure together. Thank you a million times over for being so incredible and never stop spending time together hunting Petoskey stones. Cheers to many more decades of love and happiness together!

Pontiac, Michigan | Intimate Greenhouse Wedding at Goldner Walsh | Aimee + Sam

goldner-walsh-greenhouse-wedding-detroit-michigan-photographer (47).jpg

Aimee and Sam’s intimate greenhouse wedding at Goldner Walsh in Pontiac, Michigan was seriously a DREAM! For the end of September we got super lucky with the weather, it was pretty warm out still and the sun was shining so beautifully. Let’s not forget about the venue, HOLY WOW! Goldner Walsh is such a gorgeous venue with so many places for photos!

The day started with Aimee and Sam’s first look, which was on a beautiful indoor bocce ball court! Sam’s reaction was seriously the sweetest, he just hugged Aimee and they were all smiles. After the first look we took wedding party photos (which are always a blast) and then it was time for the ceremony. Sam’s aunt officiated the wedding, which was just so special. They kept the ceremony short and sweet, and of course it was filled with A TON of laughter.

After the ceremony and family pictures, I had Aimee and Sam sneak away from the cocktail hour for some golden hour portraits. Then it was time for the reception!! The food was so amazing, the speeches were so funny (especially Sam’s brother’s speech!) and the band kept the dance floor full!

I asked Aimee how her and Sam met, this is what she had to say. “We met actually at a kickball game.  It was my first or second week of graduate school and one of the people in my cohort invited me to play kickball. She knew Sam and Sam & I immediately hit it off.  About 3 months later he asked me out on a date.  We went to Sava's in Ann Arbor, and he never lets me forget that he thought he was getting friendzoned at dinner because I wore jeans and a vest (he was dressed up)!  He also got me a book because our first date was two days after my birthday.  It was a book about suicide (at first I was majorly concerned, but when he explained it it made a lot more sense) -- I had told him during one of the first times we were talking that my dream was to go to Paris, sit at a french cafe, and have a philosophical conversation in French.  The author of this book was French and it was a book on philosophy. The rest is history!”

After hearing how they met, I HAD to ask about Sam’s proposal. This is how it went down according to Aimee. “He took me to the Ann Arbor arboretum and he kept walking around weirdly and we kept walking back and forth down this one path.  We went to an overlook that we had previously been standing on (but there was a couple down below who was definitely making out), and he said "well now that we're in the presence of love..." and got down on one knee.  He then made us dinner reservations at the place where we had our first date and we celebrated downtown with some friends!”

I love sharing reaction emails from couples when they get their gallery, Aimee seriously made my day with this one. “Your pictures are nothing short of perfect. You captured us in a very genuine way that emphasized our love, but our quirky personalities too. My mom tells me that she looks at the photos every day since you sent them!!! Your work is fantastic. Even Sam (who was AVIDLY OPPOSED to hiring a photographer when we were planning for our wedding) was looking through the photos stating how thankful he was that we 1) had a photographer and 2) hired you. You are amazing and perfectly captured our day. Thank you for everything!”

Aimee and Sam I am so beyond happy that I got to be there to witness the beginning of your next big adventure together. Thank you a million times for being so incredible throughout the whole process. I hope this new adventure together gets better each and every day. Your joy and love for each other is so beautiful and I absolutely loved being surrounded by it on your wedding day. Cheers to many more years of love and happiness!
