Detroit, Michigan | April Belle Isle Ceremony With Reception at Rustbelt Market | Ashley + Sarah

I have to say, Ashley and Sarah’s wedding in April was so beautiful. The ceremony was at Sunset Point on Belle Isle in Detroit and the reception was at The Rust Belt Market in Ferndale, Michigan. A little backstory, I’ve know Ashley for over three years now and it’s been amazing seeing her relationship with Sarah bloom. I was so honored when they asked me to be their wedding photographer!

I asked Ashley and Sarah about the story on their first date (which was right across the street from their wedding venue), “A week after matching on Bumble, we had our first date at Soho in Ferndale, Michigan. Sarah was having problems finding a parking spot, which made her even more nervous, and when Ashley saw her briskly walking towards her, she knew instantly she had met her match. Drinks and great conversation ensued, and the night took us to a few other locations; neither of us wanted the night to end. We have been inseparable ever since.”

Of course, I had to ask about the proposal (which happened the week before I got married!!), “Even though Ashley knew less than 6 months into the relationship that Sarah was the woman she would spend the rest of her life with, she decided to plan a Bonfire/Party in August so all of their closest friends and family could attend. Sarah just thought it was an end of the summer gathering, but Ashley had other plans. After a few snafus at the jewelry store, and having to rush to get the ring just hours before the proposal, things were set in place. Later in the evening, Ashley gathered everyone's attention and asked Sarah to make her the happiest woman alive. She clearly said yes, that is why we are here, but it was the most magical night either of them ever had!”

Ashley and Sarah, I wish you both the best in your travels, you both deserve it! Thank you a million times over for having me as your wedding photographer.

Since Game Of Thrones is in it’s last season, I thought it was the perfect time to share last December’s wedding at Castle Farms in Charlevoix, Michigan. Heather and Adam’s wedding had it all, a gorgeous castle setting, swords and even a dragon! Although we didn’t have any snow, the day was still beautiful and full of love and celebration.

Grand Rapids, Michigan | March Greenhouse Wedding at Downtown Market | Ariel + Travis

grand-rapids-downtown-market-wedding (411).jpg

Opening up my 2019 wedding season with Ariel and Travis’ beautiful March wedding at the Grand Rapids Downtown Market. I have to say that this was the perfect wedding to start out the season, Ariel and Travis are just the sweetest and everyone was just so excited that they were FINALLY getting married. The day before their wedding was actually their 10 YEAR anniversary of dating so the overall feeling was just finally and so much love between their families and friends.

My part of the day started off with meeting the ladies in the conference room at Downtown Market for Ariel to get dressed and have her first look with Travis. It was so nice doing a first look, I think it definitely calmed both of their nerves but also made it so easy to do portraits before the ceremony. The first look was right in the greenhouse where the ceremony would be taking place, so it was just super special. After the first look we did some portraits of Ariel and Travis and moved onto the wedding party portraits (which were SUCH a hoot!)

I asked Ariel how her and Travis met this is what she had to say, “Travis and I met in high school through some mutual friends who were (at the time) dating.  Our first date was awkward and I never expected to see him again afterwords. We were forced on a 2nd date (by the same friends) where we finally started to hit it off. Six months later on March 8th 2009 we were officially dating.”

I had to ask her about Travis’ proposal, “After taking me out for a ridiculously good dinner, Travis took me back to where we ended our first date on Lake Cadillac. There he got down on one knee and proposed to me on a very cold, snowy, and beautiful February night. I believe my response was "about dang time."
Later I found out that both of our families knew and kept it a secret for two whole weeks before he proposed!”

Ariel and Travis’ ceremony was so sweet, they did a planting/watering unity ceremony. Which actually has a pretty funny story, they money tree that they originally bought ended up being left at the house they were staying at. No biggie right? Well, when someone went back to get the plant, they accidentally grabbed the plant from the house not the one they bought. LUCKILY, the greenhouse at Downtown Market sells their plants and a new one was purchased. It really goes to show things happen at weddings, but Ariel and Travis were both cool as cucumbers and just let things happen. Just watching the pure joy on their faces after being announced husband and wife was just so beautiful.

After the ceremony we had a little break for guests to check out the market and for the reception space to be finished. All three formal dances were amazing and so beautiful, the food was amazing and those cupcakes were to die for! One of the most fun parts of the night was watching another couple get engaged in the greenhouse, it was so cool to be able to be the first to congratulate them!

Thanks again Ariel and Travis for having me be your photographer. It was such a wonderful day and I wish you both the best in your marriage and relationship.

Valparaiso, Indiana | November wedding at Aberdeen Manor | Jen + Mitch

valparaiso-indiana-aberdeen-manor-wedding-photographer (174).jpg

I couldn’t have asked for better weather for this November wedding in Valparaiso, Indiana! Jen and Mitch’s wedding at Aberdeen Manor was so beautiful and a ton of fun. I met Jen through another photographer friend who she went to college with (thanks Hannah!!) and I knew just talking with her that their wedding was going to be amazing. I actually met up with both Jen and Mitch for their engagement session about a year before their wedding, so we had an idea of what the weather could be like, but that day it was cold and wet. Not only did it not rain until evening, it was actually pretty warm! It was in the mid 50s with the sun out pretty much all day.

The day started out at Hampton Inn & Suites Valparaiso where both Jen and Mitch got ready separately. Mitch surprised Jen with a wedding gift, the purse she had been eyeing and saying “one day” to. It was such a sweet moment - she didn’t see it coming at all! The ceremony was so beautiful, just seeing Mitch cry as Jen walked down the aisle made me cry! After the ceremony we went outside for family photos, including some BIG groups and then headed out for wedding party photos.

I love bigger wedding parties, they are always so much fun and this group was a hoot! We still had a good amount of time before we had to head to the reception, so we stopped around Valparaiso for some photos of Jen and Mitch alone, and Hannah scoped out a GORGEOUS location right by the venue for some beautiful family photos of Jen, Mitch and Mitch’s son.

The reception started with some pretty epic entrances and the cutting of the giant donut! Mitch actually surprised Jen with their first dance song, which was so cute. Jen’s dance with her dad and Mitch’s dance with his mom were just as beautiful - I’m also just a sucker for parent dances. Remember when I said this wedding party was a hoot? They did not let me down during the reception. They were all on the dance floor just having a blast.

I asked Jen about how her and Mitch met and about their first date, “We met at work! I was an intern at an event company and Mitch worked in logistics. One night we were at a wedding reception waiting for the party to end so we could pick up/teardown our event items. The brides parents paid off the DJ to play for another hour, so we all had to wait outside! We started chatting that night waiting, and then exchanged numbers and that was it!  A few weeks into talking almost daily, Mitch asked me out to dinner after work. We went to Scotty's Brewhouse and had strawberry margaritas and burgers (we didn't drink craft beer back then!). It was a lot of fun, and pretty much after that we were inseparable.“

I of course had to ask Jen about Mitch’s proposal, “Mitch was off work and told me he was driving around scouting new job prospects (we were both looking for a new opportunity with work). I had just gotten off work after doing an interview for a new job that same day. I got back to my apartment and Mitch was there and acting kind of weird, messing with his phone. I went back downstairs to get a bag out of my car, and when I came back up Mitch was grinning at me, and got down on one knee! It was super sweet and just the two of us. I was completely surprised. Turns out, Mitch wasn't scoping new jobs he was getting my ring! Mitch can't keep a secret/surprise to save his life - he said the second he put it in his car and thought about "hiding it" he knew he couldn't wait any longer and proposed that same day!”

Jen and Mitch, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for both being so amazing throughout the whole process and on your wedding day. It was an honor to be your photographer, and I loved being there to witness your commitment to each other and Gavin. I also want to thank you for hanging out in the rain with me for a few minutes for that epic night photo, it’s one of my favorites!! I wish you both the best.
